Journal: Noticing I have not really noticed anything about my translation "writing" process because I am translating a poem into an art piece but in doing that I feel it is a bit difficult to still keep the main ideas of the poem in the painting. It is fun though because the poem does center on a topic that I feel strongly about so being able to translate it into an art piece is something that I have not done before and I find the whole process interesting. The argument/main point of the poem is very clear and shows the hardships that people who work in the fields have to deal with. I have not been struggling with anything else that has to do with the painting. My only concern is that my low artistic skills will not be good enough to do what I want to do and my painting will turn out crappy.
Journal: Everything's An Argument     Based on the reading it does seem like an argument can be any text that expresses a point of view. Three items that I have come into contact recently that make some sort of argument are toothpaste, granola, and an email about volunteering with children. The toothpaste makes the argument that it is the best and will whiten my teeth while also protecting them. The granola makes the argument that it is the best-tasting one and also the healthiest. For the email, the argument that it is making is that I should volunteer my free time to spend time with children because it would benefit me in that it would look good and it would really help out the children. All of the arguments seem to be that if I were to use or do that one thing then it would somehow benefit me.
Daniella Trevino Professor Williams Writing 2 10, November 2019 PB3 The primary text that I will be translating is a poem by Blas Manuel De Luna called “Bent to the earth”.   It is about a Mexican five-year-old who is in a van along with his parents and other Mexicans to go work in the fields when they are stopped by authorities. These authorities then basically attack them trying to arrest any "illegals" they can find. After that whole ordeal, they then continue to the fields and go to work. The genre is terms of its format and the conventions it follows is of a poem. But its genre of what it is about is immigration, ICE Agents, and working in the fields. The audience for this poem is the general public because anyone can read this even though it is meant for an older audience than a younger one. Because of the poem’s focus, it seems that the discourse community that the poem is meant to relate to are Mexican immigrants and those working in the fie...
Translation Brainstorm         Topics that interest me is climate change or just about nature in general. It interests me because I have strong views on climate change and protecting the earth from ourselves. I have seen this information about this subject in news articles online and in my Environmental Studies class.  I could derive my texts from maybe a powerpoint slide from my class or I could go online and look back at some of the articles that I have looked at. The pros of the PowerPoint slide are that it will be very straightforward so I won't have to search through it for my translation. The pro of the online article is there is usually a lot more information that I can go off of. The cons of both though are that they will both probably focus more on one aspect of climate change instead of in general. The PowerPoint slide does seem like the easiest to translate because of its pro. I hope to possibly translate it into an art piece.
Journal 11/5/19 What I have completed in my fieldwork is I have some of my artifacts such as my notes, slides, and some of the interviews with my professor transcribed. I still have to observe a group in my class and take notes as to how they interact with each other. I have honestly not written down any other fieldnotes besides when I observed the class and that is definitely something that I should work more on. The only thing that is worrying me about the project is that I don't completely understand ethnographies yet and I think I have a good idea of what a discourse community is but I'm afraid that maybe I don't. Also, I'm having some difficulty transcribing the parts of the interview with my professor that I need for my paper. Other than that though everything else is fine and I'm sure that if I just spend some more time on it I'll be okay.
